The paper emphasizes that camera selection should begin with the application’s requirements rather than the highest specification listed on a datasheet.

Key factors to consider

Pixel size and sensitivity

Larger pixels collect more photons, resulting in improved sensitivity and a better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), particularly in low-light conditions. Smaller pixels provide higher spatial resolution but may require stronger illumination or longer exposure times.

Dynamic range

Applications containing both bright and dark features require a camera with sufficient dynamic range to preserve detail across the entire image. An inadequate dynamic range may result in saturated highlights or loss of information in darker regions.

Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)

Image quality depends not only on resolution but also on the camera’s ability to distinguish useful information from electronic noise. For many scientific imaging applications, a high SNR is essential for accurate analysis.

System-level performance

Frame rate, interface bandwidth, software compatibility, optics, illumination, and image processing all contribute to the overall performance of an imaging system. Evaluating these parameters together often leads to better results than optimizing a single specification.
